Pioneer’s 500GB Blu-ray Disc.

Posted by F. S. KAMAL on September 24th, 2008

The Japanese manufacturer has recently announced the development of a 500 gigabytes disc that is compatible with the Blu-ray standards. To reach this unprecedented capacity, Pioneer stacked 20 layers of 25GB each.

The multi-layered method is said to be compatible with Blu-ray devices thus providing a long term future for the technology and consumer’s investment.

Pioneer used proprietary technology developed for its BD products, by stacking two different thicknesses of layers alternatively, to overcome the “crosstalk” problem between the separate layers of the optical media.

After putting aside the HD DVD standard, Blu-ray has become the de facto next generation storage system.

The prototype has still to obtain the approval of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) to formalize the standard and could hit the shelves by 2012.
