Qualcomm has announced Kayak, its offering to the developing world for surfing the Internet without using a computer. The device, which has the form of a “box” with an antenna on the top, connects to 3G wireless broadband and uses normal TV sets, or PC monitors, for displaying web sites.
The device features a built-in Web 2.0 ready browser based on Opera Software,
an audio player and 3D gaming console.
It is powered by Qualcomm’s dual core mobile station modem chipset that plays the role of a normal data crunching processor and a modem for Internet connectivity.
For interactivity with web sites, the device accepts a keyboard and a mouse.
With such a device, users will no more need a PC for word-processing, spreadsheet and other applications that are normally PC based since such functionality is now offered by web based applications such as Google docs, Zoho Suite, Microsoft’s Office Live Workspace, Thinkfree, etc.
Kayak is compatible with CDMA and WCDMA networks and will be demonstrated in early 2009.
